The APPAP Myanmar Working Group was formed to examine the mass atrocities and human rights abuses taking place within Myanmar. Since 2017, large numbers of ethnic Rohingya refugees have fled Myanmar in the wake of 'clearance operations' carried out by the Tatmadaw, Myanmar's military. International condemnation of these operations followed after evidence emerged of widespread abuse and atrocities, including genocide, were carried out by the Tatmadaw against the Rohingya and other ethnic populations within Myanmar.

In February 2021, the civilian leadership of Myanmar under Aung San Suu Kyi was deposed in a military coup. The APPAP Myanmar Working Group seeks to determine the current circumstances in the country and through research, analysis and advocacy, lessen any chances of further atrocity crimes.
