Policy Brief: Hate Speech Against Chinese Indonesians 2019-2020

22 Feb 2022

APPAP, through its Working Group on the Prevention of Hate Speech and Incitement, has funded a policy brief regarding the spread of hate speech in Indonesia.

The policy brief was published by APPAP partner the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and examines the spread of hate speech on Twitter against Chinese Indonesians from 2019 - 2020, when there was an increase in anti-Chinese rhetoric within Indonesia.

The CSIS policy brief was made possible by funding from APR2P and APPAP through their continued commitment to preventing the spread of hate speech and the commission of atrocity crimes within the Asia Pacific.

The brief built upon research from CSIS' National Hate Speech Dashboard, an APPAP initiative set up specifically to monitor hate speech in Indonesia and examine its potential to lead to further widespread violence.
